Teachers and students of KBN Bahumukhi High School located in Basail upazila of Tangail are in grave anxiety as 200 decimals land of the educational institution, including a playground, has already devoured.
Currently, one building, one tin-shed building, six tin-shed houses and a mosque situated on the campus are under serious threat of erosion.
Teachers and students demanded construction of an embankment to protect the school from erosion.
Meherun Nesa, a student of Class v11, said: “We always pass our time in anxiety for our school. If the river devours it. Academic life of 500 students will be hampered badly.”
Riya Akter, a student of class VII, said: “If the school is devoured by the river, our educational life will be come to a halt as our parents will not send us to other schools which are situated far away form our residence.”
Mujahidul Islam, a student of class X, said the ratio of education would be reduced in the locality if the school was devoured by the river.
“We are urging the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to save the school from erosion.”
Meer Abbas, peon of the school, said a hundred metre embankment was built a few years back. But, the embankment had been damaged severally due to dredging of the river in last two years.
Ayub Khan, headmaster of the school, said: “All are in tension, including local people, students and guardians, as there is no alternate place to shift the school if the erosion devours it. Education will be hampered of the students who come to the school from adjoining 10 to 12 villages. I hope that the authorities concern will take immediate steps to protect the institution.”
Kazi Sahidul Islam, chairman of Basail upazila parishad, said: “A 100-metre long concrete embankment was built four years ago. We requested the Water Development Board repeatedly to take steps to construct concrete embankment to protect the education of the students of these areas”.
Shahjahan Siraj, executive engineer of Water Development Board, said: “We have sent a proposal to the higher authority demanding fund to extend both side of the existing embankment. But there is no chance to construct it to protect the school as we could not manage the fund.”
