The historic May Day was observed across the country on Friday with a call for establishing just rights, dignity, honour, socio-economic and human rights of the working people.
In Rangpur, different political and labour organisations‚ particularly the labour wings of political parties and professional bodies, organised programmes to highlight the significance of the day, reports our correspondent.
The programmes included placing wreaths at the Shaheed Minars, hoisting of the national, labour, and organisational flags and red flags, processions, serving improved diets to the workers, and holding of discussions, and cultural and prize distribution functions.
Jatiya Sramik League, District Motor Sramik Union, Sammilito Garments’ Sramik Federation, Jatiya Bidyut Sramik League, BADC Sramik Karmochari League, Jatiya Rickshaw Van Sramik League, Rupali Bank Sramik League, Sonali Bank Sramik League, Uttara Bank Sramik League and Janata Bank Sramik League brought out colourful processions.
Truck and Tank Lorry Sramik League, Krishi-Farm Sramik Federation, District Dokan Karmochari Union, WDB Sramik League, Swarno Shilpi Samity, Electronic Sramik Union, Rang-Mistri Nirman Sramik Union, Auto Rickshaw Sramik Oikko Jyote, Restaurant Sramik and Workers’ Union observed the day.
Our Narayanganj correspondent said, to mark the day, different workers' groups, trade unions, and socio-cultural and professional organisations held rallies and processions.
A colourful rally was brought out under the auspices of the directorate of Labpour Narayanganj in the morning.
Deputy Commissioner Anisur Rahman Miah attended the rally as the chief guest, and former BKMEA senior vice president Mohammed Hatem and welfare secretary of Jatiya Sramik League Kawsar Ahmed Polash attended the rally as special guests.
The rally was followed by large numbers of workers of different mills and factories in a procession that paraded through different roads, and ended at Chashara Shahid Minar.
In the afternoon, the district unit of Bangladesh Trade Union Kendra, Garment Sramik Trade Union Kendra, Narayanganj district unit of Bangladesh Motor Jan Mechanic Federation and Bangladesh Textile Garments Sramik Federation brought out red flag rallies and processions in the city.
Narayanganj Sangskritik Jote held a musical soiree at Chashara Shahid Minar in the evening.
Our Netrakona correspondent reports the district administration organised the meeting, marking the day. Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports Arif Khan Joy adressed as chief guest a discussion on the “significance of historic May day” held at the district Shilpakala Academy.
Chaired by additional deputy commissioner (general) Netrakona Dr Abdur Rahim, the meeting was addressed, among others, by police superintendent Netrakona Jakir Hussain Khan, additional deputy commissioner (revenue) Netrakona Mohammad Yousuf Ali, public prosecutor of the district Advocate GM Khan Pathan Bimol, commander of district Muktijoddha Sangsad Nurul Amin and district -level Awami league leaders, including Nur Khan Mitu and Habibur Rahman Khan Rotan.
Later, a colourful rally paraded the main roads of the district town.
Large number of locals from all walks of life, including workers and leaders of different workers' associations, joined the rally with colourful posters, placards and banners.
The day was also observed in the Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, Jessore, Comilla, Dinajpur, Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Gaibandha, and Nilphamari districts.
