Over five hundred young climate activists in Bangladesh made a powerful statement on Saturday during a climate strike organized by Activista Bangladesh, part of ActionAid's youth platform.
Gathering in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka, they called on world leaders to stop harmful fossil fuel financing and instead allocate funds to address climate-related loss and damage, advocating for a sustainable future.
This rally, part of a global movement for climate action, highlighted demands for phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, investing in renewable energy, and supporting sustainable agriculture.
The protesters, chanting slogans and displaying placards, marched from the National Press Club to Shaheed Minar, culminating their event with a strong call for climate justice.
The activists criticized developed nations for perpetuating the climate crisis through substantial subsidies to fossil fuel companies, estimated at over $650 billion annually.
They emphasized that these financial practices disproportionately harm young people, farmers, women, and marginalized communities in the Global South, exacerbating their environmental debt. The call was clear: prioritizing investment in sustainable projects over fossil fuels is essential.
The demonstration saw participation from thousands, including volunteers from 19 districts and various local youth organizations. Across the country, similar protests echoed the demands for climate justice, showcasing solidarity and urgency.
Activists expressed their frustration over the exploitation by wealthier nations. Shimu Sheikh said: “We are fighting to end fossil finance and focus on loss and damage financing. Our future cannot be sacrificed for the profit of a few greedy corporations.”
Md Nazmul Ahsan from ActionAid Bangladesh added: “We must transition to a green economy for the sake of current and future generations, investing in those most affected by climate change.”
As one of the most climate-vulnerable countries, Bangladesh's youth are determined to amplify their demands for sustainable solutions, believing that their continued advocacy will shape a more just and resilient world for generations to come.
