A woman and her two-year-old son were killed after being hit by the intercity Cox’s Bazar Express train at Narsingdi Railway Station while returning home with their family after Eid shopping.

The accident occurred around 8:30pm on Wednesday on rail line No 2 at the station. The woman’s husband and daughter were also present at the scene.

The deceased were identified as Sathi Begum, 27, wife of Sujon Mia from Kararchar village under Putia union in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi, and their son Hasen Mia, 2.

According to eyewitnesses, railway police, and family members, Sujon Mia works variously as a day laborer. The family had traveled from Kararchar to Narsingdi town earlier in the afternoon for Eid shopping.

After completing their shopping, they arrived at Narsingdi Railway Station around 8:30pm. They planned to cross the railway tracks and take an autorickshaw home from in front of Hazera Tower.

At the station, they saw the Dhaka-bound intercity Mahanagar Express standing on platform No 1 for a long time. Like many others, they attempted to cross by entering through one door of a coach and exiting through the other side.

Sathi Begum stepped down first carrying her son in her arms, while Sujon Mia followed behind holding the hand of their five-year-old daughter. At that moment, the Cox’s Bazar Express train was passing toward Dhaka at high speed. The train struck Sathi and her son, throwing them onto the tracks and causing severe injuries to their heads and bodies.

Sujon Mia rushed his wife and son to the emergency department of the 100 bed Narsingdi District Hospital, but both died on the way. Doctors later declared them dead upon arrival.

Overcome with grief at the hospital, Sujon Mia said: “I lost my innocent child and my wife right before my eyes. I shouted after seeing the direct train approaching and tried to stop them, but I could do nothing.”

Sub-Inspector Dilip Chandra Sarkar of the Narsingdi Railway Outpost said the mother and son died after being hit by the Cox’s Bazar Express while trying to cross through a stationary coach of the Mahanagar Express. As the family raised no complaint, the bodies were handed over without autopsy.
