Attempted murder case filed over Gulistan eviction clashes

Update : 01 Nov 2016, 10:33 PM
Shahbagh SI Abdul Manna has filed an attempt to murder case against 50 people, including two leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), over the chaotic scenes on 27 October when hundreds of hawkers fought with police and DSCC officials during a move to clear illegal makeshift stores in the Gulistan area of the city. Undeterred, DSCC authorities later used bulldozers to demolish several hundred illegal structures from Bangabandhu Square Underground Market, Dhaka South Trade Centre, Dhaka North Trade Centre, Gulistan Shopping Complex, Sergent Ahad Police Box and in the Fulbaria area. Shahbagh OC Abu Bakkar Siddique told the Dhaka Tribune that an attempt to murder case has been filed regarding the incident as "people could have died.” “Two BCL leaders - Sabbir Hossain and Ashiqur Rahman - fired gunshots during the clash while 48 others attacked people in the area with batons,” he said. The two BCL leaders were expelled for “breaching the organisation’s rules” on Monday, four days after a national daily published a photo which appeared to show the duo holding firearms during the confrontation. Separately on Monday, a hawker named Md Siraj filed a case with Paltan police station against 150 unnamed people involved in the violence. “He said hawkers were attacked with local sharp weapons and hockey sticks and their shops were vandalised and looted,” said Paltan police SI Monirujjman Mia.
