Bangladeshi held in Singapore while swimming to Malaysia

A Bangladeshi national, who overstayed in Singapore, has been arrested while trying to swim to Malaysia on Thursday. Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority and police force said the 30-year old Bangladeshi man was first sighted in the Straits of Johor swimming towards the water pipeline alongside the Causeway, reports the Malay Mail Online. Later ICA and Police Coast Guard (PCG) officers located the man underneath the water pipeline and arrested him. The identity of the arrestee could not be known yet. The 30-year-old swimmer could face up to six months in jail and a minimum of three strokes of the cane for overstaying in Singapore. Moreover, two other male Bangladeshis, who were acting as lookouts were also arrested by the authorities. PCG patrol officers found the two men, aged 34 and 37, in the vicinity of the Causeway and stopped them during a routine check. They face a jail term of between six and 24 months, and fined up to S$6,000 (RM18,017).
