While talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Chittagong Superintendent of Police (SP) Noor E Alam Mina said that as many as 3,000 policemen would be deployed to maintaining law and order in at the cattle markets of the district.
“We will also keep a constant check on rawhide smuggling in the district,” said the SP.
The SP also requested the people to seek police assistance in carrying large sums of money during the holy festival.
The SP warned: “Stern action will be taken against anyone who dares to set up any unauthorised cattle market in the district. I want to make sure people know that no illegal cattle markets will be allowed as they cause agonizing traffic congestion particularly on the highways.”
According district police, there are a total of 241 authorized cattle markets in the city.
Chittagong district livestock office informed that this year a total of 259 authorized cattle markets including the makeshift ones would be set up in 14 upazilas of Chittagong.
Cattle markets set up on busy thoroughfares are a common scenario every year during Eid-ul-Azha.
In many places of the country, unauthorized cattle markets are set up by local influential people, allegedly, backed by ruling party men.
Last year on September 21, two people were killed and five others injured in a cattle market during an armed clash between two groups of the ruling party, reportedly, over assuming control of the market.
