HRFB expresses concern over sedition case against Satkhira rights activist

Rights body calls for impartial investigation into allegations, protection of activist, her family and organisation staff from harassment and intimidation

Human Rights Forum Bangladesh (HRFB) has expressed deep concern over the filing of a sedition case against Shampa Goswami, executive director of Prerona Women Development Organisation in Satkhira, and fears that she may face further harassment and security risks.

According to information received from reliable sources, a case was filed against Shampa under Section 124A of the Bangladesh Penal Code at Shyamnagar police station in Satkhira on September 29, 2026.

Shampa has alleged that police surveillance is being conducted at her residence and her organisation’s office, while her family members are also being harassed.

In a statement, HRFB said allegations of this nature require particular consideration of the fundamental rights and privacy protections guaranteed by the Constitution of Bangladesh.

It noted that Article 36 of the Constitution guarantees citizens the right to freedom of movement, while Article 43 protects the privacy of the home and correspondence.

The organisation said allegations of surveillance at an individual's residence and workplace, as well as harassment of family members, must be treated with due seriousness.

HRFB also stressed that specific allegations are essential when bringing serious criminal charges, such as sedition, against individuals involved in human rights activities.

The forum called on the relevant authorities to examine the legal basis of the case against Shampa and verify the allegations, while also conducting an impartial investigation into the complaints she has raised.

It further urged the authorities to ensure that Shampa can continue her peaceful and legitimate human rights activities, including participating in international forums.

HRFB also called for appropriate measures to protect Shampa, her family members, and the staff and volunteers of the women's development organisation from intimidation, harassment or retaliatory action.

The statement was signed by Tahmina Rahman, convener of Human Rights Forum Bangladesh and executive director of Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK).
