Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir has directed police to take legal action against drug dealers, criminals and extortionists regardless of their political affiliation.
“There is no scope to consider an offender’s political affiliation. The only identity of a criminal is that he is a criminal,” he said.
He also instructed field-level officers to take appropriate legal action against juvenile offenders.
The IGP gave the directives at the monthly crime review meeting for August 2026 at Police Headquarters on Tuesday morning.
He said the police’s “zero tolerance” policy against drugs would continue and directed officers to take measures to prevent drug trafficking and the spread of narcotics.
He also stressed community policing and greater public participation in preventing drug-related crimes.
The IGP instructed field-level officers to ensure adequate security for the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations and take measures to prevent rumours and misinformation.
The meeting was chaired by Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) Md Sayedur Rahman.
Regarding teen gangs, the IGP directed officers to gather information on the gangs, investigate whether influential individuals were operating behind them and take legal action accordingly.
