A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent former Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to jail in a case filed with Lalbagh Police Station over an attempted murder linked to the anti-discrimination movement.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order as Detective Branch (DB) of police produced Shirin Sharmin before the court seeking a two-day remand in the case. The defence, however, argued for her bail.

Investigation officer of the case and Sub-Inspector Mohsin Uddin of the Lalbagh Detective Branch (DB) of Police filed the plea to the Metropolitan Magistrate  court on Tuesday afternoon.

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was brought to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court lockup around 2:00pm.

Earlier in the morning, she was detained from a residence in the Dhanmondi area of the capital.

According to the case statement, during the anti-discrimination student movement on 18 July 2024, attacks and gunfire were carried out on protesters inside the Azimpur Government Colony under Lalbagh Police Station. A man named Ashraful was shot during the incident.

On May 25, 2025, the victim filed the case as the plaintiff, naming Sheikh Hasina, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, and 130 others as accused. Shirin Sharmin has been listed as the third accused in the case.

According to preliminary investigation findings, the former Speaker was allegedly among the key decision-makers involved in state-level actions during the movement, including on the day of the incident, described as a “complete shutdown.” Investigators claim that both direct and indirect instructions stemming from her decisions contributed to the violence.
