More than 400 illegal structures have been evicted from the Roads and Highways Department’s land in the Nimsar Bazar area of Burichang upazila in Comilla along the Dhaka–Chittagong highway.
Officials from the Roads and Highways Department and the upazila administration took part in the eviction drive, which began on Monday morning.
According to the Roads and Highways Department, notices had been served earlier to the occupants, asking them to remove the illegal structures to help restore order on the highway and ease traffic congestion. As the structures were not removed within the stipulated time, the eviction drive was carried out.
In continuation of this, officials of the department, with assistance from the Burichang upazila administration, conducted operations on both sides of the Nimsar Bazar stretch using three bulldozers. During the drive, around 300 illegal structures were demolished from both sides of the highway.
Gouripur Road Sub-Divisional Engineer Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan said such drives would continue to ensure smooth traffic flow and safety on the highway. He also noted that service lanes would be constructed along the highway to support sustained enforcement of the eviction efforts.
