Traffic movement on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway has returned to normal after a covered van broke down in the Narayanganj section, causing a traffic jam stretching about 1km.
The congestion occurred on the Chittagong-bound lane in the Pirojpur Union area on Saturday morning. Highway police later removed the vehicle, restoring normal traffic flow.
According to highway police and local sources, a large pothole developed on the Dhaka-bound section of the highway in the Ashari Char area following recent heavy rain. Urgent repair work was subsequently undertaken.
A pothole measuring about five metres wide was filled with micro-concrete, forcing authorities to close one lane from Friday morning until Saturday morning. The lane was reopened after the repair work was completed.
Meanwhile, the covered van broke down on the Chittagong-bound lane in the Pirojpur Union area on Saturday morning, causing congestion for about 1km. The traffic jam extended to the Meghna Toll Plaza.
Upon receiving the information, highway police removed the vehicle and traffic movement returned to normal.
Rubel Hossain, a passenger from Sonargaon’s Mograpara area, said: “There is no traffic jam here now. A covered van broke down in the Pirojpur Union area of the highway, causing congestion.”
Kachpur Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shamim Sheikh confirmed the matter, saying a temporary traffic jam occurred after the covered van broke down.
“Upon receiving the information, highway police removed the vehicle. Traffic movement has now returned to normal,” he said.
The OC also said one lane near the Ashari Char Bridge was closed on Friday for repair work but was reopened on Saturday morning after the work was completed.
