Model Mosammat Shimu Akter Brishti, also known as “Mishti Subash,” and Rafiqul Islam, alias Durjoy, who were arrested in connection with slogan chanting at the National Martyrs’ Memorial, have been placed on remand.
The court of Judicial Magistrate Md Tajul Islam Sohag in Dhaka granted two days of remand for Mishti Subash and three days of remand for Rafiqul Islam. Police had earlier produced the two before the court seeking five days of remand each on Friday.
The case was filed with Ashulia Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
According to the investigation officer’s petition, the accused were present at the scene, allegedly created a provocative situation and attempted to disrupt law and order. Police said remand was necessary to identify other individuals involved in the incident.
During the hearing, the defence sought bail for the accused, while the prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court granted the police request for remand.
According to the case statement, 20 to 25 people gathered near the memorial on March 26, carrying placards bearing images of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and chanting slogans such as “Joy Bangla” and “Joy Bangabandhu.” Police later detained two individuals and subsequently filed a case over the incident.
