At least 26 people were killed and many others injured in a series of road accidents across several districts during Eid holidays on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
The fatalities were reported from multiple districts, including 12 in Comilla, four in Habiganj, three in Feni, two in Kishoreganj, two in Sunamganj and one each in Pabna, Naogaon and Cox’s Bazar.
Comilla
According to Dhaka Tribune correspondent in Comilla, a devastating accident occurred early Sunday in the Jangalia Kochua area, where a passenger bus collided with the Chittagong Mail train. At least 12 people were killed and around 20 others injured in the incident. The victims included seven men, three women, and two children.
Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam of the EPZ outpost under Comilla Sadar South Police Station said the bus, operated by Mamun Paribahan, was crushed in the collision, leaving several passengers dead on the spot. Police, highway authorities, and Fire Service personnel carried out rescue operations at the scene. The bodies are being sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.
Habiganj
In Habiganj, four people were killed when a pickup van lost control and fell into a roadside ditch on the Dhaka–Sylhet highway in Madhabpur upazila on Sunday morning.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Sohel Rana of Madhabpur Police Station said the vehicle, which was carrying household furniture, veered off the road and plunged into a ditch, killing three men and one woman instantly. Police and Fire Service teams later recovered the bodies.
Feni
Meanwhile, in Feni, three people were killed and at least five others seriously injured in a road accident on the Dhaka–Chittagong highway in the Rampur area around 4:00 am on Sunday. The bodies of the deceased have been kept at Feni Sadar Hospital morgue.
Authorities are still working to confirm details of the other reported accidents in different districts.
At least three people were killed in a multi-vehicle collision on the Dhaka–Chittagong highway in the Feni–Rampur area on Sunday. Officer-in-Charge Asadul Islam of Mohipal Highway Police Station said repair work was underway on one lane of the highway when an ambulance was slowly crossing the road and was struck from behind by a Shyamoli Paribahan bus.
Following the initial collision, an argument broke out between the drivers, causing a traffic jam involving several buses and motorcycles. In the ensuing congestion, a speeding Doel Paribahan bus crashed into the stationary vehicles, hitting the bus, ambulance, and multiple motorcycles. Three people, including a motorcyclist, a bus supervisor, and a passenger, were killed in the incident.
Pabna
In a tragic incident just a day before his wedding, a groom-to-be was killed in a road accident on Sunday morning. The deceased, Julfikar Jillu (27), son of Ansarul Haque from Nowdapara village under Dashuria Union in Ishwardi upazila, was an engineer at a private company.
According to police and local sources, Julfikar was driving a private car in the morning from Dashuria in Pabna toward Bonpara in Natore to pick up his sister and brother-in-law, who were waiting there.
As the vehicle reached the Garmati area, it reportedly lost control and crashed violently into the rear of a truck parked on the roadside. The impact left the car severely damaged and lodged beneath the truck, resulting in Julfikar’s death at the scene.
Later, upon receiving information, Highway Police reached the spot, recovered the body, and initiated legal procedures.
Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam of Bonpara Highway Police Station confirmed that the vehicles have been seized and legal procedures are underway. The body will be handed over to the family after completion of formalities.
Kishoreganj
Two motorcyclists were killed and another injured in a road accident in the Darija Kandi area of Kuliarchar Upazila on the Kishoreganj–Bhairab highway on Sunday afternoon.
Police said three young men were riding on a single motorcycle when a poultry-laden pickup van coming from the opposite direction struck them. Two riders, identified as Bijoy (18) and Zabir Hossain (18), died on the spot, while the third rider sustained injuries and was taken to hospital.
Cox’s Bazar
In Teknaf Upazila of Cox’s Bazar, a motorcyclist was killed in a collision between a tourist vehicle and a motorcycle on the Shahparir Dwip road in the Haria Khali area of Sabran Union on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased, Md Anis (30), son of Baksu from Haria Khali village, died on the spot. Police said the body was recovered and sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
Law enforcement officials said they are trying to identify the tourist vehicle involved in the accident. Family members said the victim was due to be married within a month, leaving relatives in deep shock.
Naogaon
In Raninagar Upazila of the district, a teenager died after a locally made vehicle (Bhotbhoti) overturned and fell into a pond while he was out with friends during Eid celebrations.
The accident took place around 8:45 pm on Saturday in the Bhatkai–Deula road area near Khogen’s pond.
The deceased, Md Hridoy (12), son of Abdur Razzak from Amirpur village, died on the spot. At least five others were injured in the incident, according to police.
Authorities said the injured were taken to nearby medical facilities, and an investigation is ongoing.
Sunamganj
Two friends were killed and another was seriously injured in a road accident during the Eid holidays in Sunamganj district on Sunday afternoon.
The accident occurred in the Gagli area on the Sunamganj–Dirai road under Shantiganj upazila when a motorcycle carrying three friends reportedly lost control and crashed into a roadside tree.
The deceased were identified as Shafiqul Islam (30) and Saidul Islam (30), both residents of Murtakhai village under Shimulbakh union in Shantiganj upazila. The injured, Gulzar Ahmed (29), is currently undergoing treatment at Sunamganj Sadar Hospital.
According to police and local sources, Shafiqul Islam had purchased the motorcycle only a week before Eid. On Sunday, the three friends set out to visit the Shimul Bagan tourist spot in Tahirpur upazila.
While travelling through the Gagli area, the rider reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which struck a roadside tree, severely damaging the motorcycle and injuring all three riders.
Locals rushed to the scene and rescued the victims, taking them to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared Shafiqul Islam dead on arrival. Saidul Islam was later referred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he also succumbed to his injuries.
A duty doctor at Sunamganj Sadar Hospital, Dr Amzad Hossain, said one victim died before reaching the hospital, another was referred to Sylhet, while the third remains under treatment at the district hospital.
Officer-in-Charge of Shantiganj Police Station, Md Oli Ullah, confirmed the incident, saying two people were killed and one injured in the motorcycle crash in the Gagli area.
