Director General (Prevention) of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Md Akhter Hossain, has said that National Citizens’ Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah made a mistake by posting unverified allegations against the commission on social media.
On Tuesday, Hasnat Abdullah, a leader of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), posted a lengthy status on his verified Facebook page, bringing allegations against Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) officials under the headline, “Tea bill of ACC in independent Bangladesh stands at Tk1 lakh.”
In response to a journalist’s query on the matter on Thursday, ACC Director General (Prevention) Md Akhter Hossain said: “Once Hasnat Abdullah comes to know the actual facts, he will surely realise that he was mistaken. The individuals who made calls using the names of ACC officials were in fact fraudsters. Members of the ACC and other law enforcement agencies are working to trace and apprehend them.”
He added: “The matter raised by Hasnat Abdullah on his Facebook page is currently under investigation by the ACC. Other aspects of the issue will be brought under scrutiny."
He highlighted that spreading such unverified information while holding a responsible position is likely to harm the reputation of the institution.
He said: "We hope everyone will cooperate in ensuring the institution is not made controversial.”
Akhter Hossain further said that a recent enforcement operation was carried out at the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society. Immediately after that operation, a doctor claimed that their name had come up in connection with the operation.
However, Hossain clarified that no such name was released by the ACC to the media.
“That individual seems to have learned about it through other channels and assumed they were implicated. They have been filing repeated complaints to the ACC. Now, as to how they fell into a fraudster’s trap—that too is under investigation,” he said.
