Farhad Mazhar: Yunus’s desire to resign was a mistake

'Resignation would be Dr Yunus’s failure, and it would be suicidal for him'

Poet and writer Farhad Mazhar has said that expressing a desire to resign was a "mistake" by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

"Resignation would be Dr Yunus’s failure, and it would be suicidal for him. He should respect the historical will of the people, not be misled by the pressure of any party or group, and place his trust in the people," Farhad remarked in a post from his verified Facebook account on Friday.

In the post, he commented that the people of Bangladesh did not elect Dr Yunus through elections, but through a bloody mass uprising.

Farhad said: “He (Yunus) must prosecute the murderers, begin the process of forming a new Bangladesh by drafting a new constitution, establish and implement people-friendly and investment-friendly policies in opposition to the corporate domination imposed through the coercion of an open market system."

He continued: "Above all, a strong military capable of defeating enemy nations, including Delhi and Myanmar, must be formed; because it is Bangladesh that must ensure the repatriation and rehabilitation of the Rohingya in their own country. The soldiers of Bangladesh are children of this land, intimately connected to the collective will or intent of the people.

"The people’s interest is their interest as well. None of us came from Mars.”

Farhad added: “To achieve these goals, the people want the misunderstanding between Dr Yunus and the Bangladesh Armed Forces to end. Elections must be held as soon as possible, but the comments made by the army chief regarding the election, which go beyond his jurisdiction, are a justification for reinstating looters and mafia classes to power. The people who took part in the mass uprising will not accept that.

"The responsibility for pushing the country toward becoming a battleground of power struggles and civil war will then fall on the army chief.”
