Legal action will be taken over the alleged harassment of former interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in the United States, Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman has said.
He said the government would follow the same legal process adopted after actress Azmeri Haque Badhon was harassed in Italy last month.
Zahed made the remarks at a regular press briefing at the Secretariat on Tuesday in response to questions from journalists about the incident involving Yunus.
A video circulating on social media shows Dr Yunus leaving John F Kennedy Airport in New York in a wheelchair, with several people approaching him and shouting slogans. The protesters were heard making abusive remarks, including asking why he had come to the United States.
Supporters of the banned Awami League living abroad have been accused of being involved in the incident.
Responding to questions, Zahed said: “I am aware of the legal process initiated after our actress Azmeri Haque Badhon was harassed. The same will happen in this case. I want to tell the Awami League ‘terrorists’ abroad that if they attempt such actions, it will not go unchallenged.”
The adviser also said the government would examine whether there had been any lapse in the protocol and status accorded to Dr Yunus, who served as chief adviser to the interim government.
Asked about the prospects for political reconciliation, Zahed said he saw no possibility of reconciliation with the Awami League, citing what he described as a lack of remorse among its leaders and their threats.
