$13 allocated for those living in Bhasan Char

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has reversed its decision to reduce food assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and is now allocating $12 per person per month.

Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, the commissioner for Refugee Relief and Repatriation (RRRC), confirmed the matter on Thursday afternoon.

He said: “For the Rohingyas residing in Cox’s Bazar, $12 per month will be allocated, while those in Bhasan Char will receive $13. The WFP has informed us of this through a letter. Despite the ongoing funding crisis, the WFP has confirmed that food assistance for the Rohingyas will remain unchanged. This decision will help ensure their food security and nutritional needs are met.”

Earlier, the WFP had announced plans to reduce monthly food assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh from $12.5 to $6 per person starting in April due to funding shortages. On March 5, the RRRC received a letter from the WFP about the reduction.

According to the Bangladesh government, over one million Rohingya refugees currently live in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char. They fled Myanmar in 2017 due to military operations and violence, seeking refuge in Bangladesh.
