The Bangladesh Army has said that it did not receive any direct communication or intent from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk regarding the concerns he raised during a recent interview with BBC HARDtalk.

This clarification came on Monday, through a press release, amid ongoing discussions about Türk's remarks, which some quarters have reportedly taken out of context.

Recently, a news segment on BBC World Service's HARDtalk discussed the role of the Bangladesh Army in the July-August student movement, featuring comments from UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

In a statement, the Bangladesh Army mentioned its adherence to national security directives, the rule of law, and human rights principles.

It noted that if any concerns had been raised, they were directed to the former government of Bangladesh and not to the Army leadership.

The Army further highlighted its long-standing commitment to the people of Bangladesh and its history of neutrality and integrity, referencing key historical moments such as the democratic transition of 1991 and its role during the July-August 2024 protests.

“The Army maintained public safety during these protests without bias or external influence,” the press release said.

Additionally, the Bangladesh Army underscored its contributions as the second-largest contributor to UN peacekeeping missions, emphasizing its global recognition for professionalism.

Over the past 23 years, the Army's peacekeeping efforts have brought approximately Tk27,000 crore into the national economy, demonstrating its economic as well as security contributions.

Reaffirming its partnership with the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, the Bangladesh Army expressed openness to addressing any concerns through transparent dialogue and constructive engagement.

The Army remains dedicated to both national service and its international commitments.
