The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has said that the bus involved in the accident on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway toll plaza could not be stopped despite multiple attempts to apply the brakes, citing the detained driver’s account.
RAB also said that the bus driver, Mohammad Nur Uddin, 26, did not have a valid license renewal and had a history of substance abuse, as revealed during preliminary interrogation.
RAB-10 Senior Assistant Police Superintendent Tapas Karmakar, quoting the driver, mentioned that the bus had been out of order for a long time and was put back on the road only after repairs.
The driver realized the brakes were faulty right from the start and informed the owner, who advised him to drive slowly.
He further said that the driver claimed to have tried applying the brakes several times during the accident but was unable to stop the bus.
"Driver Nur Uddin admitted to consuming marijuana, but he said that he was not intoxicated while driving the bus on Friday," said the RAB official.
Earlier, Tapas Karmakar mentioned that the driver was arrested on Friday night from Siddhirganj, Narayanganj.
On Friday, a Kuakata-bound Bepari bus struck a stationary private car, motorcycle, and microbus at the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway toll plaza, killing six people.
