A total of 548 road accidents have occurred on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway since the Padma Bridge was opened on June 25, 2022, leaving 147 people dead and 874 injured, according to fire service sources.
Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, deputy assistant director of Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defense, said the accidents occurred between the Mawa Toll Plaza and Dhaleshwari Toll Plaza of the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway.
He said that from June 25, 2022 to Thursday, August 27, 2026, a total of 548 road accidents were recorded on the stretch.
Fire service firefighters risked their lives to rescue the injured and send them to hospitals, Shafiqul said. They also recovered the bodies of those killed and handed them over to police.
He said the number of road accidents is increasing alongside growing vehicle pressure on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway.
In this situation, drivers and the general public need to become more aware to prevent accidents, he said.
Shafiqul also urged drivers to refrain from risky overtaking, follow road instructions and traffic signals properly, and drive within the prescribed speed limit.
He added that drivers should obey traffic laws, maintain a safe distance and refrain from inattentive and reckless driving to help reduce road accidents on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway.
