Educated unemployment soaring in Bangladesh, warns adviser

'The environment for higher education in the country has been steadily declining'

Update : 22 Dec 2024, 04:16 PM

The number of educated unemployed individuals in the country is increasing at an alarming rate, said Education Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud.

He made this comment on Sunday during a seminar titled "Global Standards in Higher Education: What Bangladesh Needs to Do," held at a hotel in the capital.

Wahiduddin Mahmud said: "The environment for higher education in the country has been steadily declining. This is due to factors such as the sycophantic politics among teachers, the criminalization of student politics, and severe irregularities in teacher recruitment."

He added: "Over time, educational institutions have been left fragile. In discussions among teachers, research is sidelined, with politics taking center stage. To move forward, we must address the root causes of this situation."
