Students protest in Banani demanding permanent campus

Traffic movement halted in the area

Update : 21 Dec 2024, 06:36 PM

Students of Prime Asia University have staged a protest blocking Kamal Ataturk Avenue in Dhaka’s Banani area. According to reports, they are demonstrating to demand a permanent campus.

The protest began around 2pm on Saturday, leading to the suspension of vehicular movement on the road.

Students of Prime Asia University have expressed their frustration, saying that despite being promised a transition to a permanent campus for a long time, it still hasn’t happened.

They mentioned that one of their two departments was supposed to shift to the permanent campus by December, but now the Board of Trustees, led by Nasir Uddin, is allegedly trying to sell the land allocated for the campus at Purbachal (300 Feet area).

Currently, the existing two campuses do not have sufficient space to accommodate the students.

The lease for the temporary campus in Banani has expired, and the administration keeps delaying the promised transition to the permanent campus. Additionally, the students allege that the Board of Trustees is using university funds for personal expenses, including a monthly car allowance of Tk65,000 for Nasir Uddin.

Students claim that their seniors have long fought for the demand of a permanent campus but failed to achieve it.

They now fear that the administration is conspiring to deny them access to the permanent campus altogether.

They have demanded the resignation of Nasir Uddin and other responsible authorities and insist on being shifted to the permanent campus without further delay.

Regarding the matter, Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Russel Sarwar said: “The students don’t seem to have a specific demand. At first, they said they want a permanent campus, and later they demanded the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor. We’ve spoken to the university authorities and are working to find a solution by mediating between the students and the administration to stabilize the situation.”
