Leaders, activists of various political parties, and the general public gathered to pay homage to the martyred intellectuals of the 1971 Liberation War at the Rayerbazar Martyr Intellectuals Memorial in Mohammadpur on Saturday.
Tributes began at dawn, with delegations from various parties offering floral wreaths at the site.
Mohammadpur BNP leaders and activists were among the first to honour the martyrs, followed by residents and individuals from all walks of life.
Groups including the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Revolutionary Communist League of Bangladesh, National University, and Jagannath Hall of Dhaka University also paid their respects at the memorial.
December 14 marks Martyred Intellectuals Day, commemorating those who were systematically murdered in 1971.
As the Liberation War drew to a close, the occupying Pakistani forces and their local collaborators, including Razakar, Al-Badr, and Al-Shams, orchestrated the brutal killings of teachers, scientists, intellectuals, writers, journalists, artists, doctors, engineers, lawyers, government officials, and sports personalities in an effort to cripple the emerging nation's intellectual foundation.
Since the country's independence, this day has stood as a solemn occasion to honour their sacrifice and remind the nation of the immense cost of its freedom.
