Train operations between Dhaka and the rest of the country resumed after being suspended for over six hours on Thursday.
The disruption occurred due to a blockade by battery-powered rickshaw drivers protesting near the railway lines.
The suspension, which began around 10am, ended at 4:10pm, causing significant inconvenience to passengers. Thousands faced delays as train schedules were disrupted nationwide.
Dhaka Railway Station’s Station Master, Anwar Hossain, said that train services resumed with the departure of the delayed Jamalpur Express. Other delayed trains, including Ektar Express, Kishoreganj Express, Jayantika Express, and Agnibina Express, are now gradually departing from Dhaka.
Earlier in the day, Anwar Hossain said that train services were suspended for safety reasons following the rickshaw drivers’ blockade.
The protest came in response to a High Court order issued on Tuesday by a bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Mahmudur Raji.
The court directed authorities to enforce a ban on battery-powered rickshaws within Dhaka Metropolitan Area within three days.
The order instructed the home secretary, local government secretary, inspector general of police, Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner, and the two Dhaka city corporations to implement the decision promptly.
The blockade by the rickshaw drivers, protesting this decision, brought train operations to a standstill, resulting in significant inconvenience for passengers and disruptions to train schedules.
