UBUI condemns Trump’s comment on violence against minorities in Bangladesh

Highlights the harm caused when a president-elect spreads misinformation

Update : 09 Nov 2024, 02:10 PM

The US Bangladesh Unity Initiative (UBUI), representing the Bangladeshi American community, has condemned recent remarks by US President-elect Donald J Trump concerning violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh.

In a statement on Friday, UBUI addressed the spread of misinformation surrounding minority rights in Bangladesh, particularly denouncing unverified claims of widespread attacks and human rights violations targeting a specific religious community.

“We, members of the Bangladeshi American community, are deeply concerned by the spread of misinformation regarding the state of minority rights, especially regarding the unverified claims of large-scale attacks and gross human rights violations against a specific religious community in Bangladesh without presenting any evidence. It is most unfortunate when such misinformation is amplified on social media by a presidential elect and a false narrative reaches millions of Americans, portraying an image of Bangladesh that cannot be further from the truth.

As Bangladeshi Americans, we feel obligated to present the status of minority rights in Bangladesh accurately and truthfully to the American people. Doing so, we hope to promote greater collaboration and unity between the two countries.”

The statement added that it is vital to provide important context regarding the current situation in Bangladesh following the recent political transition. There have been reports circulating that suggest minorities, and especially the Hindu population, are facing widespread and coordinated attacks and persecution in the aftermath of the former prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina's overthrow by a popular movement.

However, these claims paint an inaccurate and misleading picture of the realities on the ground in Bangladesh today, it added.

“There have been attacks on minority communities before and since Sheikh Hasina's overthrow and we call on the interim government to investigate these incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice. However, contrary to the claims of Trump and others who have been engaged in a systemic campaign to spread misinformation since Sheikh Hasina's departure on August 5, local and international media that have investigated recent attacks have found some of these incidents to have been politically (rather than communally) motivated.

“The interim government has already taken steps to prevent any further attack on civilians regardless of their religious or political beliefs and is working tirelessly to guarantee the safety and security of all citizens. The Bangladeshi American community is closely following the developments in Bangladesh and plans to maintain pressure on the government to independently investigate each incident.”

The statement said that the current Chief Advisor of Bangladesh, Dr Muhammad Yunus, embodies the country's commitment to these ideals.

“Dr Yunus is a world-renowned humanitarian, economist, and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate recognized for his pioneering work in microcredit and championing the rights of the poor. His guiding philosophy centers on the belief that all people, regardless of background, deserve the opportunity to realize their full potential. Dr Yunus' transition government is dedicated to upholding human rights, strengthening democratic institutions, and fostering social harmony.”

Bangladesh's civil society remains vibrant and vigilant in monitoring human rights issues. It is vital that the international community has an accurate understanding of the complex dynamics at play as Bangladesh navigates this political transition.

Unfounded narratives of rampant anti-minority attacks and Hindu persecution risk stigmatizing an entire nation and undercutting the remarkable progress it has made, the statement read.

“We respectfully request all individuals, especially highly influential political figures and public officials, to seek out reliable information from objective sources on the ground and view the situation in its proper context before weighing in. Bangladesh's success as an inclusive democracy is critical for regional stability and US interests. Prioritizing facts rather than dangerous distortions is an important way we can support this democracy.”

On October 31, Donald Trump strongly condemned the violence against minorities in Bangladesh while criticizing his rival Joe Biden- Kamala Harris administration in a Diwali message.

"I strongly condemn the barbaric violence against Hindus, Christians, and other minorities who are getting attacked and looted by mobs in Bangladesh, which remains in a total state of chaos," Trump wrote in X, formerly Twitter.

"It would have never happened on my watch," he wrote.
