The US embassy in Dhaka has hosted an election watch party in an effort to strengthen cross-cultural ties and promote democratic values.

"The US electoral process is a testament to democracy in action," US Embassy Chargé d'Affaires Megan Bouldin said as she hosted the party at the American Center on Wednesday morning when the announcement of the results was underway.

The event provided a platform for youth leaders, journalists, and civil society members to witness and engage in discussions on the US presidential election, its significance, and the impact of youth engagement on democracy.

"By engaging Bangladeshi youth in this experience, we are fostering a better understanding of democracy and the importance of civic engagement. We hope this event inspires future leaders in Bangladesh to recognize the power of their voices in shaping their own democratic processes," she said.

It featured interactive activities, such as panel discussions and a mock election where attendees voted for their favourite American sweets - cupcakes and doughnuts.

Participants also watched live updates from the United States as election results began to unfold, offering the invitees a front-row seat to this critical event.

Channel 24 journalist Morshed Hassib who was covering the elections at the invitation of Washinton joined live from the polling stations.

"Democracy is about having a voice and being able to make choices about our futures. When we vote, we are making decisions about things that affect us all: education, climate change, and social justice, just to name a few," Bouldin said.

"Democracy is not perfect. We always strive to be better, and we can always improve. The US election process is dynamic, and like every democracy, we also encounter challenges. Challenges like disinformation and misinformation," she said.

She, however, said democracy is about more than just voting every few years.

"It's about being engaged in our communities and advocating for change. Sometimes, it's as easy as starting a conversation about your concern with elected officials. We all have a role to play."
