A writ petition has been filed with the High Court challenging the legality of the Reciprocal Trade Agreement (RTA) signed between Bangladesh and the United States.

The writ was filed on Monday by Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Mohammad Maidul Islam Polok, and was later presented before the court by Advocate Subir Nandi Das.

The foreign secretary, and the secretaries of the Ministries of Finance and Commerce have been made respondents in the petition.

The writ describes the agreement as unreasonable, structurally imbalanced, and contrary to Bangladesh’s national interests.

It further claims that the RTA between Bangladesh and the United States has failed to safeguard the country’s economic sovereignty and public welfare, and that constitutional procedures were not followed in its execution.
