1. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (April 11, 1971 – January 12, 1972, and again from January 25, 1975 – August 15, 1975)
- Became the first president of the provisional government formed in Meherpur following his arrest and proclamation of independence; he later became president after introducing a new political system.
2. Syed Nazrul Islam (Acting: April 17, 1971 – January 12, 1972)
- Acting president during the War of Independence.
3. Justice Abu Sayeed Chowdhury (January 12, 1972 – December 24, 1973)
- Became President following Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s shift to prime minister.
4. Mohammad Mohammadullah (December 24, 1973 – January 25, 1975)
- Assumed the position following Abu Sayeed Chowdhury's resignation.
5. Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad (August 15, 1975 – November 6, 1975)
- Commerce minister in the government, he assumed the presidency after the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
6. Justice Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem (November 6, 1975 – April 21, 1977)
- First Chief Justice of Bangladesh from 1972 to 1975, Justice Sayem was appointed President and Chief Martial Law Administrator after the coup by Brigadier General Khaled Mosharraf.
7. General Ziaur Rahman (April 21, 1977 – May 30, 1981)
- Gen Ziaur Rahman assumed the presidency after Justice Abu Sadat resigned.
8. Justice Abdus Sattar (November 27, 1981 – March 24, 1982)
- Vice President under Ziaur Rahman, he became Acting President after Zia's assassination in 1981.
9. Justice Ahsanuddin Chowdhury (March 27, 1982 – December 10, 1983)
- Became President after Army Chief of Staff General Hussein Muhammad Ershad assumed power as the Chief Martial Law Administrator.
10. General Hossain Mohammad Ershad (December 11, 1983 – December 6, 1990)
- Declared himself President in 1983; he was forced to resign in 1990.
11. Shahabuddin Ahmed (As Acting President: December 6, 1990 – October 10, 1991; Elected President: October 10, 1996 – November 14, 2001)
- After mass protests forced Ershad to resign in December 1990, Chief Justice Ahmed became the acting president to oversee the transition to democracy and the 1991 election.
12. Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury (November 14, 2001 – June 21, 2002)
- Elected by the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance government, he had to resign after a dispute with the BNP.
13. Jamaluddin Ahmad (Acting: June 21, 2002 – September 6, 2002)
- Acted as President after Chowdhury's resignation.
14. Prof Iajuddin Ahmed (September 6, 2002 – February 12, 2009)
- Elected after the resignation of Badruddoza Chowdhury. Took on the role of head of the caretaker government during a political crisis in 2006
15. Zillur Rahman (February 12, 2009 – March 20, 2013)
- Elected under the Awami League government.
16. Abdul Hamid (April 24, 2013 – April 24, 2023)
- Following Zillur Rahman's death in March 2013, Abdul Hamid, then speaker of parliament, became acting president. He was formally elected president by Parliament in 2013 and served two terms until 2023.
17. Mohammed Shahabuddin (April 24, 2023 – Present)
- Elected president unopposed in 2023 following Abdul Hamid's retirement.
