The Bangladesh Police has said 1,695 cases have been filed against attackers, instigators and those who ordered brutal actions aimed at suppressing the recent student-led movement, noting that  3,195 individuals, including 74 high-profile leaders of the Awami League, have been arrested in October so far.

The arrests had been made based on specific evidence of their involvement in these heinous and reprehensible acts, with legal actions continuing, the law enforcement agency said in a Facebook post on Sunday.

The police were committed to fulfilling the public expectations created by the recent Anti-Discrimination Student Movement led by students and the general public, it said.

“Legal proceedings, including cases and arrests, have also been initiated against those who, under the protection of political parties, were involved in extortion, tender manipulation, terrorism and various other criminal activities, with measures ongoing.”

The Bangladesh Police also said students and others involved in the movement had no reason to be concerned, adding that the force’s service would be harassment-free and people-friendly.

Calling the student movement a groundbreaking milestone in building an inclusive society and securing the rights of all people, the agency said it had opened doors to immense possibilities for everyone.

The police added that they were determined to work hand in hand with students and the general public.
