The BNP on Thursday claimed that Atikul Islam Jibon, who died two months after sustaining injuries during the student-led uprising at Shahbagh on August 5, was a Chhatra Dal activist of its Pallabi Ward No. 5 unit.

Jibon, 24, an active participant in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. He died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 6pm on Wednesday.

His body was released from the DMCH on Thursday. The funeral prayer took place at the BNP office in Naya Paltan, followed by burial after the Isha prayer, according to his uncle, Ruman Mia.

Dhaka University Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon claimed that Jibon was an activist of the student organization.

When asked about Jibon's educational background, Shipon mentioned that Jibon had to drop out of school due to financial hardships and could not continue his studies regularly.

"He was actively involved in Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal politics in Ward No. 5 of Pallabi Thana and participated in programs at Government Bangla College," he added.

He was last seen at a demonstration at Shahbagh. According to his family, around 2pm on that day, when his mother called him, an unknown person answered the phone and informed her that Jibon had been critically injured and was admitted to the DMCH.

Upon arrival, Jibon’s family found that he had been shot, with a bullet entering the top of his head and exiting through his ear. Despite being in a coma for two months, Jibon never regained consciousness.

Jibon, the only son among four siblings, had been supporting his family financially since his teenage years. His father, Jalal Mia, works as a security guard in Dhaka, and the family struggled with financial difficulties. "Jibon’s salary made up a significant portion of the family’s income," said Ruman Mia.

A close friend of Jibon, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that Jibon worked at a shoe factory in Dhaka. His wife, who is currently seven months pregnant, was unable to see him before his death. “He never got the chance to meet his unborn child,” the friend said.
