Protesters have blocked the Shahbagh intersection, demanding that the minimum age limit for entering the government workforce be raised to 35 years, according to international standards.
The protest began around 1pm on Saturday.
The protesters said that in nearly 162 countries around the world, the minimum age limit for applying for goverment jobs is at least 35 years, and in some countries, it is even more.
Jasim Nayek, the coordinator of the protest, said: "We have been carrying out this movement for the last 12 years. The previous Awami League government did not accept our demand. Instead, they repeatedly filed cases against us and persecuted us.
“We demand from the student-friendly government to implement the age limit of 35 without further delay and publish it in the form of a gazette. Give our students the opportunity to return to their study desk.”
Meanwhile, the blockade by job seekers has caused severe traffic congestion at Shahbagh and surrounding roads. Only ambulances are being allowed to pass through Shahbagh, while most vehicles are being redirected to alternative routes.
Traffic Sergeant Toufiq Hasan, stationed at Shahbagh, said: "Due to the blockade at Shahbagh intersection, the surrounding intersections have been informed. Vehicles heading towards Shahbagh are being diverted to alternative routes. We are trying to reduce public inconvenience."
