Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has called on the newly appointed superintendents of police (SPs) to take strict measures to stop bribery and extortion.
He said: "There is another form of business within the police—recruitment and transfer business. This too must be stopped immediately."
He made the comments during a briefing for 26 newly appointed SPs in the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Secretariat on Thursday morning.
The adviser said: "Bribery and extortion are the main sources of corruption. If these can be stopped, many injustices and irregularities in society will be eradicated. Any police officer found involved in such activities (corruption) will face strict action.”
He added: “A criminal is a criminal, no matter who they are, and must be dealt with following the law."
Jahangir Alam Chowdhury also mentioned that the police have the responsibility to mitigate the public's anger due to past irregularities and corruption within the force. He urged the SPs to work with a service-oriented mindset using the existing manpower and logistics.
