Fact check: Rumours of giving Pagla mosque’s 7C donation to flood victims false

The mosque committee has not made any such decision

Update : 24 Aug 2024, 07:11 PM

A devastating flood has caused a humanitarian crisis, severely disrupting the lives of the people in Feni, Noakhali and Comilla districts.

In response to the disaster, people from across the country have come forward with relief aid.

Recently, several posts on Facebook have gone viral claiming that the Tk7.22 crore found in the donation boxes of the historic Pagla Mosque in Kishoreganj will be given to flood victims.

However, after speaking with the mosque committee, it has been confirmed that this information is incorrect and is merely a rumor.

The mosque committee has not made any such decision.

On August 17, the donation boxes at the historic Pagla Mosque in Kishoreganj yielded an impressive sum of TK7.22 crore after counting the contributions.

This total includes cash, foreign currency, and gold jewelry.

Earlier this year, on April 20, the mosque’s donation boxes yielded a record amount of Tk7.78 crore.

In the past two days, posts on Facebook have claimed that this amount will be donated to flood victims.

When asked about this, Shaukat Uddin Bhuiyan, an administrative officer of the Pagla Mosque committee said: "No decision has been made regarding donating funds from the mosque to the flood-affected. There has been no meeting on this matter. The posts circulating on Facebook are false."

The same information was confirmed by Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, also the president of the Pagla Mosque Committee

"The claim circulating on Facebook that Tk7.2 crore from the mosque’s donation boxes will be given to flood victims is false. The mosque is managed by a 30-member committee. Since receiving the funds from the latest donation box, there has been no committee meeting."

Therefore, any claim that the committee has decided to donate this money to flood victims is false. The mosque is managed under the Waqf Estate, so the committee cannot unilaterally decide to donate the mosque's funds, added the DC.
