Dr Muhammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s newly formed interim government, will visit the home of Abu Sayed, a student at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, killed in police firing during the recent quota reform movement.
Yunus will arrive in the city by helicopter around 9:30am on Saturday. He will also visit Abu Sayed's grave and talk to his family, media reports quoted Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Md Mobasswer Hasan as saying.
Upon his arrival at Dhaka airport on Thursday, Dr Yunus became emotional recalling Abu Sayed.
He said: "At this moment, I am reminded of Abu Sayed, whose image is etched in the memory of every Bangladeshi. This cannot be forgotten. What an incredibly brave young man he was, standing in front of guns, and since then, no young man or woman has given up. They have moved forward and said, shoot as much as you can. We are here.”
Abu Sayed led from the front during the quota reform movement.
On July 16, a clash occurred involving students and the police, Chhatra League and Jubo League. Sayed was killed by police gunfire during the clash.
He was buried the next day in Pirganj upazila.
Abu Sayed was a key coordinator of the quota reform movement at Begum Rokeya University.
