Traffic movement halted on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway

Only auto-rickshaws are seen on the highway

Update : 04 Aug 2024, 11:15 AM

Traffic on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway has come to a halt following the non-cooperation movement enforced by students protesting against discrimination.

The movement has caused severe disruptions for commuters since Sunday morning, particularly in the Siddhirganj section of the highway.

While visiting the Shimrail intersection of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, it was observed that long-distance vehicles were not operating.

Currently, only auto-rickshaws are seen on the highway.

In the early hours of the morning, some trucks and covered vans attempted to head towards Chittagong but were stopped by the protesting students, leading to a deserted state on the highway.

Belal Hossain, an office worker, said that he arrived at the highway to find no vehicles available, forcing him to walk to his workplace.

Another passenger, Shawon, who was on his way to Dhaka for an urgent task, said that due to the lack of transportation, he had to use multiple rickshaws to reach his destination.

Regarding the situation, Traffic Inspector AKM Sharfuddin said that the road has been blocked by protesters since morning, and traffic has been light since last night. “We are working to restore normal traffic flow.”
