Mamunul Haque: We do not support violence

‘Govt must stop the path of repression and apologize to the nation’

Mamunul Haque, secretary general of Khelafat Majlis, said they do not support violence of any kind/ 

“We express solidarity with the ongoing peaceful and logical movement of the student community and the nine-point demand. We also demand that no other bullet should be fired on the students, he said this in a written statement at a press conference of Khelafat Majlis on Saturday.

"A deadlocked, uncomfortable situation is prevailing in the country. The government cannot avoid its responsibility for these misdeeds. The government must stop the path of repression and apologize to the nation and resign immediately,” he said. 

Mamunul Haque demanded that the real culprits should be identified and punished after a 100% neutral and international investigation.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said she wants to sit with quota reform protesters. 

“Ganabhaban’s gates are open. I want to sit with quota reform protesters. I want to listen to them. I don't want conflict.”

She made the comments at a meeting with the central leaders of the Professional Coordination Council.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also instructed law enforcers to release the detained students and said every murder will be prosecuted. 

On May 3, Maulana Mamunul Haque, former joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam, was released from jail. 

According to an Islamic scholar close to Mamunul, the latter is accused in 41 cases filed with different police stations.
