Quota reform: Clash erupts at RU

A clash has took place between police and protesting students at Rajshahi University on Wednesday evening.

The clash took place after 7pm.

Police entered the university through the Kajla gate around 6:30pm on Wednesday. This creates resentment among the students.

After the presence of police, they started to collect brick chips.

At one stage, the police started firing tear hells and rubber bullets around 7:10pm. The protesting students were dispersed but after some time they gathered again and started chanting slogans. After about thirty minutes of police operation, the students dispersed again.

During this time, many people were affected due to smoke from tear gas.

Police also freed RU Vice-Chancellor Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar who was kept confined in the admitration building of the university by the protesting students.

After being freed, the VC said that there is no fear for the students in the hall. They will stay safe in the halls. Law and order forces and university administration will provide security to them.

Earlier, students agitating for quota reform protested on the campus since morning with 5-point demands including withdrawing the order to leave the hall.

On this day, from 3:30pm, they confined the senior officials of the university administration, including the vice-chancellor, in the administration building.

Police dispersed the students and rescued them in the evening.
