At least three students were injured when chases and counter-chases occurred between the Chhatra League and protesters on the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
The protesting students claimed the students were injured in the attack by Chhatra League activists.
One injured was admitted to Sheikh Hasina Medical College Hospital, Tangail. However, they could not name the injured students.
After the clash in Tangail, a large number of police were deployed in different parts of the city. Police are in a strict position to avoid any untoward situations.
According to students, police, and local sources, more than 100 district Chhatra League leaders and activists took positions in the central Shaheed Minar premises in Tangail on Tuesday morning. At around 11am, Chhatra League activists chased the anti-quota students as they moved towards Nirala intersection in the city. The protesters retaliated, leading to a series of chases and counter-chases.
Tangail Police Superintendent Golam Sabur said: "To avoid chaos, a large number of law enforcement personnel have been deployed at various places in the city. They are on alert to control any unpleasant situations."
However, Tangail District Chhatra League unit President Sohanur Rahman Sohan denied the allegation of any clash with protesting students.
Earlier, the protesting students blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway for one and half hours.
On Tuesday, around 2:30pm, they lifted the road blockade from the Ashekpur Bypass area of the highway.
Currently, traffic on the highway is back to normal.
The students started the blockade around 1pm, ignoring police obstructions. At that time, they chanted various slogans, demanding the cancelling of the quota system.
Earlier in the day, when the students reached the old bus stand with their protest march, the police tried to stop them. Ignoring the obstruction, the students continued their march onto the highway.
