Vehicular movement halted on several kilometres of highway

Update : 16 Jul 2024, 04:13 PM

Students from various educational institutions blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway at Ashekpur bypass for an hour on Tuesday afternoon, protesting Chhatra League's alleged attack on students and demanding quota reform for all government jobs.

Students from Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, Government Saadat College, Government Maulana Mohammad Ali College, Government Kumudini College, and Sheikh Hasina Medical College & Hospital, Tangail participated in the blockade program.

During this time, vehicular movement was halted on several kilometres of the highway, creating traffic jams on both sides.

The protesting students said the quota system is creating discrimination, which is against the constitution.

They argued that while quotas are appropriate for the children of freedom fighters, extending them to their grandchildren is discriminatory.

During the protest, a large number of police were deployed on the highway.
