Industrial police recovered three bomb-like objects in Ashulia on Saturday amid garment workers’ protests that left more than 10 industrial police personnel and several others injured.

The objects were recovered around noon in front of New Age factory in the Nishchintapur area along the Baipail-Abdullahpur road.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Industrial Police-1 Syed Faisal Islam confirmed the recovery, saying the objects were found during the protests. Police could not immediately determine who had brought or left them at the scene.

Ashulia police station has been informed, and police are expected to take legal action, he said.

Protests began early Saturday when workers from several garment factories in Kathgora Bazar, Nayapara and Nishchintapur stopped work and came out of their factories after 8am.

By noon, workers had gathered on the Abdullahpur-Baipail road in Nishchintapur, where the demonstrations escalated into clashes and vandalism.

Workers from Continental, AR Jeans and other factories allegedly threw bricks and stones and damaged property, including windows at AR Jeans and Continental.

Police and other law enforcement agencies fired tear gas and sound grenades to disperse the protesters and restore order on the highway.

The ensuing clashes left more than 10 industrial police personnel, several workers and pedestrians injured.

The authorities concerned and AR Jeans management declared general holidays amid the unrest.

Industrial Police-1 Superintendent Mohammad Mominul Islam said the situation was under control.

At least 26 factories, including AR Jeans, Continental, Naim Knitwear, New Age, Knit Asia and Sterling Creations, remained closed amid the protests.
