State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu has said 50,000 tons of onions imported from India will enter Bangladesh's market within a short time.
"The first truckload of onions will arrive from India next week,” the state minister said while speaking as the chief guest at an event marking World Consumer Rights Day at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka on Friday. The theme of the day was “Smart Bangladesh Gori, Voktar Sarthey Krittim Buddhimotta Bebohar Kori.”
A total of 50,000 tons of onions will enter the country gradually, he added.
Titu urged businessmen and civil society representatives to come forward to keep product prices under control.
"We are working to strengthen the supply chain, to control the prices of products during Ramadan. We have been able to reduce the price of oil. Now, pulses, chickpeas and sugar are available in the market," he said.
He said the government is working to strengthen the Directorate of Agricultural Marketing.
The directorate will determine the retail and wholesale prices of products, the state minister added.
He said the state-owned Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is selling daily essentials at subsidised rates to 10 million low-income families nationwide. The program is benefitting around 40 million people across the country, Titu added.
Titu said many traders and companies are selling products at mill-gate prices, which is giving consumers a lot of relief.
At the event, the state minister for commerce inaugurated the Supply Chain Monitoring System (SCMS) software.
