State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Tuesday said the power tariff is being adjusted to reduce the losses.
"We have faced losses due to selling electricity at a lower price than the cost of production, so some adjustments are being made. We are trying to raise costs, the price will increase by a very small amount,” he told reporters at the Secretariat.
Lifeline subscribers (users up to 75 units) bills may increase by Tk20, the state minister said.
At present, electricity is sold at a subsidized price, he said, adding that the average production cost of electricity is Tk12 per unit, while it is being sold at an average of Tk7.
“This year, Tk43,000 crore will be given as subsidy on electricity,” he added.
On Tuesday, Nasrul Hamid announced that the prices of electricity will go up from the first week of March.
The minister said that electricity prices would go up by 34 paisa to 70 paisa per unit.
