Update : 26 Feb 2024, 11:30 PM

In the face of criticism, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has cancelled the directive to rename Sugandha Beach to "Bangabandhu Beach" and the area between Kalatali and Sugandha Beach as "Muktijoddha Beach".

Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque informed Bangla Tribune around 8:30pm on Monday: "The instruction to change the name of the beach has been cancelled. No such decision has been taken from the ministry. Besides, the decision to take action against the officer involved in the incident has been finalized. We are taking action against him."

In a circular signed by Md Sahab Uddin, assistant secretary of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, on Sunday, the naming instructions were revoked.

The naming instructions were initially given on February 19 under his signature. A letter sent to the deputy commissioner of Cox's Bazar requested necessary measures regarding the name change of the two beaches.

It was mentioned in the letter that the decision to name the two beaches was made in the 13th meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs of the 11th National Parliament, considering the request of the President of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sontan Sangsad Md Solaiman Mia.

A flurry of criticism erupted on social media regarding the directive to rename Sugandha Beach as Bangabandhu Beach. The decision to name this small point in honour of the Father of the Nation sparked criticism nationwide.

In the new notification, it is requested not to take any action on the earlier instructions sent on February 19. Simultaneously, the earlier letter has been cancelled.

When asked about this, Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar Muhammad Shaheen Imran said: "The instruction to name Bangabandhu Beach has been cancelled. The ministry informed the matter by letter."

In response to the question of the decision to change the name in the light of which decision, the deputy commissioner said: "It was informed in the letter of the ministry that Sugandha Beach was decided to be renamed Bangabandhu Beach based on the recommendation of the parliamentary committee. We took action in the light of that letter. Later, in another letter from the ministry, it was decided to cancel it, so we moved away from there."
