A tourist died, and another went missing after strong currents swept them away while bathing in the sea at Jal Tarongo Point on Cox's Bazar beach on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Yasin Khan, a resident of Dhaka’s Kuril area. The missing person is Mohammad Ibrahim Khan, also from Dhaka.

The incident occurred around 3pm, said Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Cox's Bazar Model Police Station.

He said Yasin was rescued and taken to a hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

A rescue operation is underway to find Ibrahim, the OC added.

The two were part of a group of about 110 tourists who came to Cox's Bazar on Saturday and Monday and were staying at Hotel Vista Bay in the town.

Members of the group work at various organizations; some are students. Several of them are reportedly employees of IZKP Company.
