Another road, rail and waterways blockade called by the BNP and its like-minded opposition parties is underway across Bangladesh to protest the schedule for the next national election announced by the Election Commission.
This is the 11th blockade being enforced by the BNP and its allies since October 31.
The blockade began at 6am on Tuesday and will end at 6pm on Wednesday.
The presence of public transport and commuters on Dhaka streets seemed normal, despite tension and fear of arson attacks.
Earlier on Monday night, arsonists set two buses on fire in Dhaka’s Tikatuli and Mohammadpur areas.
The police arrested two people when they were escaping after setting the bus of Midline Paribahan on fire around 8:30pm, said Mohammadpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tofazzal Hossain.
Law enforcement officials patrolled the streets and remained deployed at several important points in Dhaka.
Vehicles of media outlets, ambulances, and those transporting oxygen cylinders and medicines were out of the purview of the blockade.
The BNP and its like-minded opposition parties are enforcing blockades to press home their demand for the resignation of the Awami League government and holding the next election under a non-partisan administration.
