Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) expelled leader late Abdus Sattar Bhuiya’s son Mainul Hasan Tushar has collected the Awami League's nomination form to contest in the by-polls for the Brahmanbaria-2 (Sarail-Ashuganj) seat, which became vacant following his father's death.
Tushar, along with his supporters, obtained the form from the Awami League office in Dhaka on Saturday.
After collecting the nomination form, Tushar said: "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina honoured my father during his final days. Therefore, I am fully hopeful about receiving the 'boat' symbol."
Advocate Abdus Sattar Bhuiya, who was a member of parliament from Brahmanbaria-2 (Sarail-Ashuganj) constituency, breathed his last on September 30 while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
The Election Commission declared the seat vacant on Wednesday and scheduled the by-polls for November 5.
In 1979, Abdus Sattar Bhuiya was elected as an independent candidate from the then-Comilla-1 constituency and later secured victories from Brahmanbaria-2 in the 1991 and 1996 elections as a BNP candidate.
In the 2001 election, he served as state minister for law, fisheries and land under the four-party coalition government.
Despite a period of political inactivity after the 2008 election, he staged a successful comeback in the 2018 polls as a BNP-nominated MP.
He was one of seven BNP leaders who resigned from parliament on December 11 in line with a decision of the party.
Later he decided to contest the subsequent by-polls to his constituency as an independent candidate.
He was later expelled from the BNP on January 2.
