Update : 25 Sep 2023, 11:27 AM

Three days of continuous rainfall combined with an influx of water from upstream in India have led to an increase in the water level of the Teesta River.

According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), as of 6am on Monday, the Teesta River was flowing 28cm below the danger level at the barrage point.

However, on the opposite side of the river, the water was 7cm above the danger level at the Kaunia road bridge point. This information was confirmed by Ghulam Farooq, office assistant at the Water Development Board in Lalmonirhat.

To manage the increased water pressure, 44 sluices of the Doani point of Teesta Barrage project have been opened.

Areas at risk of flooding due to the rising water levels include Khuniya Gach in Lalmonirhat Sadar, as well as Rajpur, Gokunda, Mogulhat, Kulaghat, Barabari, Tushbhandar in Kaliganj upazila, Kakina Bhotmari, Srirampur in Patgram, and Patgram, Burimari, Dahgram, Jagatber, Baura, Mahishkhochcha in Aditmari Upazila, along with Durgapur and Dauabari in Hatibandhar, Sindurna, Goddimari, Barakha, Singimari, and Patikapara Unions. Low-lying areas in these unions are particularly susceptible to flooding.
