Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Joint Commissioner (Cyber and Special Crime and DB North) Khondkar Nurunnabi has claimed that six arrested Chhatra Dal were planning major acts of sabotage to spread panic in the capital.
He made this claim at a press conference at DMP's media centre on Sunday afternoon.
The arrested are Mominul Islam, 31, senior joint general secretary of Chhatra Dal's Dhaka University unit, Mohammad Arif Billah, 30, former deputy general secretary of Chhatra Dal's private university branch, Dhaka University Chhatra Dal Vice President Md Hasanur Rahman Hasan, 32, Chhatra Dal Central Co-organizing Secretary Md Shahadat Hossain, 31, Jahangirnagar University Chhatra Dal's former senior joint general secretary Zahir Uddin Mohammad Babar, 32, and Dhaka University Chhatra Dal's Joint Secretary Md Abdullah R Riyad, 21.
In a press conference, Khondkar Nurunnabi detailed that the llegal Arms Recovery and Drug Control Team of the Branch Detective Gulshan Division conducted a special operation at a residence under Lalbagh thana on Saturday. The operation resulted in the arrest of the six individuals and the seizure of three illegal firearms along with 36 rounds of ammunition.
During the arrest, Nurunnabi said, Mominul Islam and Mohammad Arif Billah were searched, leading to the discovery of the weapons. The confiscated items included an iron wooden butt pistol with a loaded round, an iron wooden butt top brake revolver with eight loaded rounds in their shoulder bag, 19 rounds in a black plastic box, and a pistol with eight loaded rounds. A top-break revolver with a wooden butt was also retrieved.
The police officer added: "We seized several mobile phones from the suspects, containing pertinent information. Images of the recovered weapons were also found on their phones. The weapons were allegedly obtained in Teknaf and Pabna. We have the names and addresses of the sources from whom the weapons were procured. The ongoing operation aims to arrest these sources."
The DMP official explained that the suspects collected the weapons in preparation for disruptive activities during the upcoming election. Two cases have been filed against them, and a remand application was submitted to the court on Sunday.
Further details are expected to be extracted from them during remand interrogation, potentially leading to the recovery of more weapons, he added.
