The Jamaat-e-Islami leader and convicted war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee has been taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka from Dhaka Central Jail-1 at Kashimpur after he felt chest pain.
Shahjahan, superintendent at the jail, confirmed the matter and said Sayedee was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital initially. At around 5pm he was referred to BSSMMU for better treatment.
Deputy Commissioner Abul Fateh Muhammad Shafiqul Islam said quoting doctors that Sayedee has suffered a mild heart attack and therefore he has been taken to BSMMU.
On Feb 8, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Sayedee to death for war crimes committed in the 1971 Liberation War. Clashes erupted between the police and Jamaat supporters left at least 35 people dead while scores were injured in protest following the death sentence.
The Supreme Court on Sept 17, 2014 reduced the punishment from death sentence to life imprisonment following a petition by Sayedee.
